As fall turns to winter and the temperatures outside slowly decline, it is also time to switch your cooling system off and turn on your furnace. Before you do so, make sure the entire system works properly and safely. We have come up with this checklist to ensure you and your home stay warm through the winter months.

Change the Filter – Air filters should be changed at least every 3 months, but it is always a good idea to replace it before you start your furnace. By doing so, you can ensure the air quality of your home and allows your HVAC system to run as efficiently as possible.

Check the Thermostat – Your thermostat is essentially the manager of your heating system. The thermostat has the job of reading your home’s temperature and telling your heating system when to turn on to meet your desired temperature. In order to do so, the thermostat needs to be set correctly.

  • Check the Batteries – This may be an obvious point, but it is best to change the batteries now then to go without heat when it is cold outside.
  • Set the fan to “Auto” – By doing so, you are telling the fan to only blow air that has been heated into your home. When the fan is set to “On”, it will blow air regardless of whether it is heated or not.
  •  Set the Thermostat to “Heat” – Another obvious point, but a setting that is often forgotten as it has not been touched for the last six monthts. Make sure you switch the thermometer to “Heat”, not “Cool”.

Schedule Routine Maintenance – Your HVAC system should be maintained twice a year for optimal performance and inspected for necessary repairs. Now is a great time to make sure your system is ready for the change in weather. You can also ask your technician to review any items you have discovered during your own inspection.

Are you prepared for the cooler weather this winter? Follow these steps to make sure your furnace is prepared to keep you warm as the weather changes.
